Patience

Nicholas G. Kotchision, MS, LPCMH, LCDP
Wilmington, Delaware

The definition of "Patience" in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary of 1973 is to suffer and to endure hardship and pain. With the families with whom we counsel, I have found that no matter how quickly I might want the parents to learn and begin using this program, it can only be accepted when presented at the pace that is conducive to the parents' in each family. Just as each individual has her/his own pace at which growth takes place, so does each family. It sometimes requires much patience on my part to accept that I need to join with each parent in order to be heard and accepted with the info I am presenting. Once I am successful with this step, then the rest of the work with helping the parents learn Family Rules becomes easier.
