Teen Adolescent Placement Services (TAPS)
Teen Adolescent Placement Services started as a parent support group for those parents with adolescents out of control. Shortly after they started the support groups, they started a for profit company and soon realized what was needed was a Non-Profit Corporation. They formed a California Non-Profit public benefit (501-c-3) tax exempt corporation on August 20th 1996. TAPS believes that they are the only Non-Profit corporation offering the services listed in their brochure. Their stated purpose is to “...provide parents, childcare professionals and others a guide to appropriate resources for the treatment of struggling teens. The services listed in their brochure includes: Parent Support Groups; Adolescent Counselors; Short-term Crisis Centers; Acute Care Programs; Residential Treatment Centers; Liaison With Probation Officers; Drug & Alcohol Education; Intervention Coordination; Adolescent Transportation; and Schools, Camps, and other Alternatives.

Linda Shaffer, Educational Consultant
"I gave up and went through an educational consultant because I was getting no where on my own fast. Her name came up a lot as I was making contact with organizations. She was always spoken of highly. Her fees are only half the price everyone else charges. She doesn't make you go through all the psychological testing again, if you already have had them done and have the information available. Her fee is $1,200 and she will not take your money until she has interviewed you and knows she will be able to find placement for you. After I started working with her I was off and running, things just really moved for me at last." Anonymous Parent Grants Pass, Oregon

Integrative Educational Consulting
Amy Aldrich, founder and owner, earned her Master's degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. She is a licensed professional counselor. Before entering the consulting field, she worked therapeutically with adults in outpatient treatment and with adolescents and their families at a therapeutic boarding school. Prior to settling in Seattle, Washington, Amy lived and worked internationally. Most importantly, Amy has hands-on experience working within educational and therapeutic settings. She knows what does and doesn’t work for struggling students and their families. Unlike most educational consultants, she has walked families through the entire process; day by day . . . not just studied it. This vital experience gives her a sharp eye for what to look for when visiting programs and schools. Amy understands that programs are not always what they seem and knows what to ask and how to detect problems and inconsistencies in order to find the right fit. Integrative Educational Consulting knows that your child/student is more than his or her current behaviors. We help you navigate through the myriad of options to find therapeutic schools and specialty programs to address the whole student. We regularly evaluate these schools and programs, in-person, to assess efficacy and treatment approaches, following trends in practices and procedures as well as the professionals who work directly with students.

Reactive Attachment Disorder Consultation
For some children--- victims of abuse and neglect--- emotional attachment is not something inevitable and welcomed, but painful, and is avoided (both consciously and unconsciously) at all costs. This is the center of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). The individual is often misdiagnosed, so they and their family are given ineffective treatment--- which only deepens the problem at heart. At Circle of Life Consultation Services, Rhonda Lettington (skilled and experienced with victims and families in crisis) has opened a Web site of help, guidance, and community. The links at the left can take you to whatever you may need. Click News for upcoming events on her seminar schedule, and see how to register for one. Click About RAD to read through a detailed discussion of the disorder, it’s symptoms, and what can be done. And finally, if you would like someone to work with you, click Finding Help to search for therapists in your area. (If you want to help someone, you can offer your services, as well.)

U-Can-Learn
Individualized Attention A complete two hour evaluation determines the input areas to the brain that are not working well for each child. Using parent report materials and standardized testing, the evaluation incorporates an evaluation based on the individual needs. The goal f the testing is to determine the reasons a child is not performing at their full potential. The typical child we treat is the child who has an average IQ or higher, is working very hard at school, can’t always stay focused and who is becoming more and more discouraged or anxious. A Specially Tailored Treatment Plan Once the blockages to learning have been identified, the appropriate therapies can be provided. They may include one or more of the following treatments, based on the child’s needs (All of our therapies are available at a sliding fee scale discount for qualified families.): Focus, Attention, Memory and Cognitive Therapy We offer two effective therapies that increases focus, attention, memory, organizational skills, positive mood, willingness to complete homework and decreases anxiety. These therapies are performed on computers, are short in duration but with long-lasting effects. We were highlighted on Channel 2 news in April 2003 for our Interactive Metronome Therapy. This news article is posted on the website, www.interactivemetronome.com. Only three years old, this therapy was reviewed by Dr. Edward Hallowell, the author of Driven to Distraction. He writes: “The Interactive Metronome (therapy) is spectacularly helpful. It is one of the most promising developments with non-medication of ADHD that’s come along in a long while. This is a really solid, extremely helpful non-medication intervention not only for ADHD but for mental functioning in general.” Speech and Language Services Karla has twenty years of expertise in the treatment of speech and language disorders after all of her years in private practice. Ages two through high school are served with weekly sessions and fun homework for practice outside of the clinic. Visual Processing Disorder/Irlen Syndrome For some children, the words are slippery minnows that their eyes can’t catch a hold of. The Irlen Syndrome is a set of symptoms that cause a child to perceive movement on the page, especially if the page has a lot of information on it. In fact, 46% of low readers are found to have the Irlen Syndrome. These children can become tired, lose their place often, get headaches, misread easy words and reading comprehension can be poor. Colored Irlen overlays and the use of colored paper, prevents the perceived movement on the page allowing a stress-free reading experience. We have two certified Irlen screeners at our center. Auditory Processing Disorder Therapies Two highly effective treatments for Central Auditory Processing problems are Earobics and the Fast ForWord family of products. These are both computer-based programs that are completed at home for approximately 6-8 weeks and monitored by our therapists at U CAN LEARN. Work sheets are also used to allow the child to gain good auditory processing skills while they are having fun completing them. Dyslexia Treatment Dyslexia is caused by many breakdowns in the input system, whether is it visual inaccuracy, poor auditory skills or both. Our highly-effective therapies are a blend of computer practice, direct instructional methods based on the Orton-Gillingham program, as well as homework practice. With the use of our newest reading program, a program that won ‘best educational product’ award two years ago, our struggling readers are jumping at least two years in reading comprehension and accuracy ability after only six months of instruction. Nanci Ross, our Reading Specialist and Reading program coordinator, was recently named to The Utah Dyslexia Board. Tutoring Services We offer specialized tutoring help to increase a child’s ability in writing, spelling, arithmetic and reading skills. Section 504 Accommodation Support Once a learning disability or an area of deficit has been determined, we help you approach your child’s school with 504 accommodation suggestions to enable him to learn at his maximum potential without ridicule or discrimination. For more information on these federally mandated section 504 accommodations, please see the article section for a complete explanation.

John Herring, Jr.
Do you need assistance with qualifying for Social Security Disability? Do you need assistance with the appeal process because you've been denied Social Security Disability Benefits? Well, I would like to recommend that you give John Herring, Jr. a phone call. I've known John Herring, Jr. since 1980 when we were both fellow students in the Social Work program at the University of Alaska. He went on to obtain his MSW from Eastern Washington State University. A few years later, he won a major disability discrimination law suit against the State of Washington because they were not accomodating the fact that he was/is legally blind. In short, John knows what it's like to have a disability and he knows what it's like to butt heads with "the system". You will not find a more tenacious Pit Bull to fight on your behalf than John. He's been doing it for years and years. If you need John Herring, Jr. on board to help you with your struggles to qualify for disability benefits or with the appeal process, he's the person to contact. Although his office is in Alaska, he travels all over the "Lower 48 States" to assist his clients.
